According to a report obtained by this publication from the Defense Headquarters, this was part of the force’s safety campaign and preventive measure.

Speaking during the exercise, the Director of Medical Services (DMS), Air Commodore Olufemi Olutoye, noted that the incubation period of the virus was between two and 21 days and that victims usually exhibit symptoms that may be mistaken for malaria fever.

He said these symptoms include general body weakness, vomiting, fever, headache, cough, stomach pain, joint and muscles pain, chest pain, bloody diarrhoea and bleeding from the eyes, ears, nose and mouth in extreme cases.

Olutoye explained that the virus could be contracted through eating the meat of infected animals such as monkeys, chimpanzees and bats, which were common African delicacies, or by feeding on fruits eaten by infected bats, or through contact with a severely sick victim of Ebola or the carcass of infected animals.

He debunked the claim that the virus could be transmitted through the air, adding that a patient cannot spread the disease until the individual begins to manifest the symptoms.

The official pointed out that there was no scientific evidence to support claims that salt and bitter kola could cure the disease.

Nigeria is among a number of countries affected by the worst Ebola outbreak in years.
